OUR MISSION

Our mission is to help build Lucia Mar schools where every child is challenged to achieve, every student learns in a safe and age-appropriate environment, and parents, teachers, administrators, and Trustees work as partners toward educational excellence. We respect the distinct role each plays: parents as their children's primary advocates, teachers as skilled professionals, and school leaders as stewards responsible for sound policy, resources, and accountability.

Lucia Mar Has Enormous Potential

We are fortunate to have dedicated teachers and staff, engaged parents, and a community that cares deeply about its schools. We believe that building on those strengths requires a clear focus on the fundamentals of a successful education.

Academic excellence should be the central purpose of our schools.

Every student deserves the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed after graduation. Student achievement should be measured honestly, meaningful goals should be established, and when students are not making adequate progress, schools should be willing to examine what is working—and what needs to change. The district should actively seek out and learn from successful practices in other schools and states, prioritizing approaches with a demonstrated record of improving student achievement, and then evaluate their applicability to Lucia Mar. New initiatives should have a clear purpose, measurable objectives, and a means of determining whether they are actually producing better outcomes for students.

Students deserve school environments that are age-appropriate and conducive to learning.

We believe graphic sexually explicit material has no place in school libraries or instructional materials intended for students. Parents should be able to trust that when they send their children to school, the material presented to them will be appropriate for their age and consistent with the fundamental purpose of education and community standards.

Biology matters in education, particularly when it comes to sports and private spaces.

We believe sex-specific sports and private spaces—including bathrooms, locker rooms, and changing areas—should be based on biological sex. This protects privacy, safety, dignity, and fair athletic opportunities for both girls and boys. Students who are uncomfortable using spaces designated wfor their biological sex should be treated respectfully, and schools should provide reasonable accommodations without compromising the privacy of any student.

Transparency builds trust.

Parents and members of the community should be able to understand how important decisions are made, what policies are being implemented, and how well those policies and programs are serving students. Public resources should be used thoughtfully and in keeping with the district's educational priorities.

We believe improvement is possible.

Our goal is to encourage thoughtful discussion, ask reasonable questions, recognize what is working, and then advocate for changes when we feel they are needed. We believe that when the community focuses on what is best for students, Lucia Mar can become an even stronger school district.
